Ugo Humbert defeated Andres Martin in straight sets to book his place in the next round of the Washington Open. The Frenchman converted all four of his break point opportunities as he won 6-2 7-5 to set up a meeting with Ben Shelton. This is his first appearance at the event since a quarter-final finish in 2023.
Shelton overcame a scare to get past Martin Damm. The 24-year-old, who is seeded number two at this event, was a break down in the deciding set but fought back to win 6-4 4-6 6-4. This was his first match since suffering a surprise first-round defeat at Wimbledon to Otto Virtanen.
Shelton leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Humbert in straight sets at the first-round stage of ths year's Australian Open. The world number eight could only manage a first serve percentage of 59% in the previous round, and he will have to serve better if he is to get the better of a dangerous Humbert.
