Diego Lopes: Can the perennial contender make a statement for a third shot?
Diego Lopes (27-8) remains one of the most dangerous men in the featherweight division, and his record needs context – two of those losses have come against the featherweight goat, Alexander Volkanovski, and another was a five-day short-notice debut to the unbeaten title contender Movsar Evloev. This Brazilian rebounded from his first Volk loss with a savage second-round spinning elbow TKO over Jean Silva. Lopes is a BJJ black belt dangerous everywhere, on the feet he works behind his jab, looks for counters on his opponent’s entries, and has a granite chin that’s survived shots capable of sleeping absolutely ANYONE at 145.
Steve Garcia: The wrecking ball nobody wants to stand in front of
Steve “Mean Machine” Garcia (19-5) enters on a seven-fight win streak, having battered his way into the top 10 with an impressive run of knockouts. Garcia has 15 career knockouts, and since his KO loss to Maheshate in 2022, he’s finished every opponent excluding Calvin Kattar. In his last bout, and his first main event, David Onama was dismantled inside a round, after which he called for a BMF fight with Max Holloway. Garcia is a twitchy, feint-heavy pressure boxer who slips, rips, and stalks behind his southpaw left.
Diego Lopes vs Steve Garcia prediction
On paper this is a guaranteed banger, but the real question is whether Garcia actually wants to stand in the pocket with Lopes. Garcia’s frame suits his aggressive boxing style, he’s the slightly bigger man with a reach advantage, however, every opponent he’s destroyed within the first round has shared one trait - they’re not known to have durable chins. Lopes is the complete opposite. He ate some crazy shots from Jean Silva, the type that sleeps most of the division, and not only did he survive, but he planted his feet and fired back. The opponents that have given some trouble for Garcia, like Maheshate and Kattar, stayed composed in the pocket and backed the firefights – exactly where Lopes thrives.
Volk took Lopes to two decisions, but he did it circling on the outside on the back foot, and refused sloppy engagements, Garcia won’t do that. Garcia presses forwards, craving a boxing exchange, playing straight into Lopes’ weapon of timing a fight-ending counter on the entry.
Don’t forget the occasion too, Lopes has headlined the sport’s biggest cards while Garcia steps into a spotlight he’s never experienced, he’s used to fighting at the Apex, not in front of a worldwide crowd. On top of that, Lopes holds his grappling in reserve in case he needs it, but expect him to invite the chaos, the 50/50, and catch the pressure fighter coming in. The price for a Lopes finish is worth backing. Lopes is a lock.
Prediction: Diego Lopes to win by KO/TKO
