Mauricio Ruffy: Flashy striker being billed as Conor McGregor 2.0
Mauricio Ruffy (13-2) has electrified the lightweight division since arriving into the UFC, racking up 12 knockouts and ending the fight early in all but one of his career victories. The Fighting Nerds standout tore through the division before Benoit Saint-Denis halted his rise with a second-round submission, a loss that’s aged well, given BSD has since finished Dariush and Hooker on his way to title contention. Ruffy answered emphatically at UFC 325, getting a read and outclassing the Muay Thai specialist Rafael Fiziev on the feet before stopping him in the second. He’s a dynamic and fluid striker who whips his shots with eye-watering torque.
Michael Chandler: A beloved showman running on fumes
Michael Chandler (23-10) is a former three-time Bellator Champ and one of the sport’s greatest entertainers, but his UFC results tell a humbling story – since arriving in 2021, he’s gone 2-5, beating on Dan Hooker and Tony Ferguson. He enters on a three-fight loss-streak, most recently walked down by Paddy Pimblett, and left on the shelves collecting dust for two years chasing a Conor McGregor megafight that never materialised. At 40, his best days are behind him. Chandler still swings monstrous hooks and has a wrestling pedigree, but he’s yet to use it, has been defensively exposed on every occasion, and is prone to baffling lapses of fight IQ.
Mauricio Ruffy vs Michael Chandler prediction
Chandler is on this card for two reasons: he’s an American waving flag, and he’s a showman that throws bombs. Beyond that, it’s hard to justify his presence on an event of this magnitude against a finisher as sharp as Ruffy. The Brazilian is one of the most dynamic strikers in the entire promotion who know trains with the featherweight goat Volk, and Chandler offers him a tailor-made target. Chandler drops his head a lot whenever he swings his overhands, and against Ruffy’s timing and precision, that habit is an open invitation with a fight-ending counter, a jumping knee maybe.
If Ruffy could get a read on Fiziev, a slicker and more unpredictable striker than Chandler, and make it look routine before finishing him, he should have an even easier night decoding “Iron’s” predictable entries. Being realistic, Chandler will just want to swing big meaty hooks, grab a hold of Ruffy, and dump him in front of Mr President for loud reactions. However, Chandler will more likely walk onto something nasty, and become the latest highlight on Ruffy’s reel.
Prediction: Mauricio Ruffy to win by KO/TKO
