World number 87 Zhuoxuan Bai ended last season with some excellent work on the Challenger circuit, picking up two titles on the Asian swing to qualify outright for her Australian Open debut. The 21-year-old won on her overall Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon last summer before a consummate defeat to eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur but she has picked up just one tour-level win since. World number 71 Elina Avanesyan enjoyed her best season on tour yet last year with eye-catching runs to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros and the quarter-finals of the Berlin 500. The Russian, also 21, has won just two matches on tour-level hardcourts since the start of August but she looks the slight favourite on experience at this level on her Melbourne debut. Back Avanesyan to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
