THE PREDICTION

World number 60 Zhizhen Zhang could enjoy a transformative fortnight in Shanghai as he comes in hot off the back of winning gold at the Asian Games. The 26-year-old started this season behind 23-year-old Yibing Wu but his compatriot’s fast rise up the rankings seemed to spur him into action, with a remarkable run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters seeing three huge comebacks over Denis Shapovalov, Came Norrie and Taylor Fritz. World number 64 Richard Gasquet won the 16th ATP title of his illustrious career at the start of 2023, also beating Norrie in the Auckland final, but a 14-21 record for the season belies a severe depreciation since. The 37-year-old has improved a little in recent months, with a run to the quarter-finals of Winston-Salem ended in three tight sets by Sebastian Korda, but home advantage and momentum both favour the Chinese number one. Take Zhang to win outright, with three sets and a tiebreak quite likely.
