In the end, David could not topple Goliath as Spain were defeated by defending champions and favourites USA in the last four. The Spanish gave a great account of themselves and were tied come the end of the third quarter. However, Team USA stepped up a gear in the final frame, outclassing Spain 8-18 and ultimately winning 66-76.
Germany were beaten more convincingly by France, who won all four quarters of their semi-final, with the Germans simply unable to contain an excellent French offence. That game finished 86-64, Germany scoring the second least number of points they’ve managed in a single match all tournament.
The least number points they recorded, came in the group stage against Spain as the two European nations clash again, this time for third-place. Spain were comfortable 83-53 on that occasion and whilst this contest should prove closer with Germany more established and confident on the floor, Spain are still a better team across all departments and backing them to win is the sensible move.
