THE PREDICTION

In-form Yulia Putintseva moved back up to world number 50 after an excellent March saw her reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells and the quarter-finals at the Miami Open. The 29-year-old is a solid all-courter but perhaps most effective on clay, on which she won both of her WTA titles, and she has impressed so far in Madrid. The Kazakh was in control of her match with sixth seed Qinwen Zheng before the Chinese was forced to retire injured, backing up an impressive opener over Yue Yuan, and she looks the reasonable favourite to come through this first encounter with world number 56 Caroline Dolehide.

However, 25-year-old Dolehide will back herself to compete after an excellent comeback over 30th seed Anhelina Kalinina on Friday, backing-up an easy opener, and she stunned Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells last month to prove she is capable of a big occasion win at this level. The American reached the Guadalajara Masters final last September, albeit amidst a weakened field, to further prove her potential at this level but back Putintseva to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors here.
