THE PREDICTION
Former world number 14 Petra Martic is one of the more unpredictable players on tour with a deceptively strong game for all surfaces and the capability to find a very high ceiling. The 32-year-old, currently ranked 41st, came back from a set down to beat Rebeka Masarova on Tuesday but she should be better for an early scare in Auckland. 25-year-old Yue Yuan will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 73rd after scraping through a tight three-setter with Kayla Day on Tuesday. The Chinese finished runner-up to Jessica Pegula in her maiden WTA tour final at the Korea Open back in October and she went on to reach a further three finals on the ITF circuit, winning one of them, to bring some serious form into 2024. Three sets seem likelier than two here but Martic should be able to weather enough storms to edge through. However, taking the Croat to earn at least a set at this early stage of the season feels the sensible concession.
