25-year-old Tommy Paul is back up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 18th after back-to-back round of 16 exits across the Sunshine Double to top 10 players in Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime. The American changed the course of his career in January with a stupendous run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and he has maintained an excellent level since, recently finishing runner-up at the Mexican Open in his first ATP 500 final. World number 134 Yannick Hanfmann will be pleased to be back on his favoured clay but this looks too steep a climb against a solid all-courter like Paul. The German qualified well this week before a three-set victory over Yosuke Watanuki and he beat Paul in their only previous encounter on clay at the Cagliari Open in 2021. Paul is much better these days but transitioning over to the clay may prove tricky, so backing the American to win outright is the sensible move here.
