THE PREDICTION
World number 71 Xiyu Wang proved some doubters wrong with an excellent three-set victory over her compatriot and contemporary, Xinyu Wang, on Wednesday. The 22-year-old was the first if the two to display signs of a big future on the WTA tour with some eye-catching results in 2022 but it remains to be seen how she improves on a choppier 2023 amidst so much hype for China’s new generation. World number 76 Diane Parry came back from a set down to stun third seed Lesia Tsurenko on Wednesday, her second comeback of the week after overcoming Emina Bektas in the first round.
The 21-year-old has shown plenty of potential on her favoured clay in recent seasons but the conditions in Auckland arguably better-suit Wang, who beat Parry from a set down at the US Open last September. All four of their respective matches have seen three sets this week too, so consider a one-off on this second meeting to need a decider.
