Former world number four Sofia Kenin enjoyed some really strong runs on the late hardcourt swing last season, reaching back-to-back semi-finals in San Diego and at the Guadalajara Masters, to repair her ranking. The 25-year-old has struggled to build on that since, trailing a poor five-match losing streak into Indian Wells, but her performance sin similar conditions last autumn suggest she could find something of her former self in the desert.
World number 75 Viktoriya Tomova brings a not dissimilar four-match losing streak into Indian Wells for a concerning depreciation from the form that saw her reach the quarter-finals at the Hobart International in January. The Bulgarian is struggling to maintain a constant presence on the WTA tour, despite enjoying plenty of success on the ITF circuit last season, but Kenin’s level fluctuates so wildly between her fierce best and flawed worst that this first meeting between the two could go any way at all.
