Katie Volynets returns to action after losing 7-5 6-1 to Linda Noskova in the first-round of the US Open. Volynets had led 5-2 in the opening set and held two set points before Noskova turned the match around, winning 11 of the final 12 games. That defeat came only two days after an excellent week at the WTA 125 in Philadelphia, where Volynets won the title. She beat Mananchaya Sawangkaew and Oksana Selekhmeteva in straight sets before defeating Tereza Valentova 6-3 7-5 in the final.
Elvina Kalieva was most recently in action at the Guadalajara Open, losing in the first-round to Kayla Day. Before that, the 23-year-old successfully qualified for her first US Open main draw, beating Kristina Mladenovic, Sofia Costoulas and Vendula Valdmannova. Kalieva then pushed Lanlana Tararudee to three sets in the main draw before losing 6-3 6-7 (4) 6-2.
Kalieva has produced some encouraging hard court results recently, but Volynets brings the stronger form overall and greater consistency from the baseline.
