Darya Astakhova has already picked up two wins in Seoul after coming through qualifying. The 24-year-old opened with a 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-2 victory over Haruka Kaji before producing an upset in the final qualifying round, beating Alexandra Shubladze. Astakhova converted six of seven break points against Shubladze.
Magda Linette arrives in Seoul looking to arrest a difficult run of results. The Pole was beaten in three sets by Francesca Jones in the first-round of the US Open and also lost 6-0 6-3 to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in her Cincinnati opener. Her most recent victory came in Toronto, where she recovered to beat Carol Zhao before a defeat to Iva Jovic. Linette is the number seven seed in Seoul.
Linette has a considerable advantage in top-level experience, but the rankings arguably make this look more straightforward than recent form suggests. Astakhova’s match sharpness and strong record on hard courts this season give her a realistic chance of keeping this competitive.
