THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Veronika Kudermetova enjoyed an ultimately strong season last year, winning her most prestigious title yet at the Tokyo 500 with huge results over Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula as well as making back-to-back Masters semi-finals on clay in the spring, but it was frustrating in parts too. The 26-year-old will be targeting at least one deep run at a major after failing to reach the third round at any of the Slams last year and her 2-5 record in finals is also a concern. World number 28 Anastasia Potapova also enjoyed the best results of her young career last year, stunning Coco Gauff en-route to the quarter-finals at the Miami Open in March and adding a second WTA title at the Linz Open but she struggled with injuries towards the end. Potapova beat fellow Russian Kudermetova to win her maiden title at the Istanbul Cup in 2022 but Kudermetova has won each of their two meetings since then, all three on clay.

Notably, Potapova has earned at least a set in all four of their matches so far but it would not be a surprise to see that stat falter this time around. Back Kudermetova to have to much for her compatriot, who needed three sets to edge past Daria Saville on Wednesday in her first match since late September.

TIP: VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA TO WIN
