THE PREDICTION
World number 18 Cam Norrie blew off the cobwebs of a poor 2023 in style on Friday with a gutsy performance against Australia’s Alex de Minaur, taking the first set before rallying well to force and win a deciding tiebreak. The 28-year-old looked exhausted in parts of last season, far from the tireless runner we had become used to watching in recent years, but it will be interesting to see how far this relieving win can take him in the coming weeks. World number 10 Taylor Fritz ended his season early last November after struggling with both form and fitness in the latter half of 2023. The 26-year-old led the USA to victory at the inaugural United Cup this time last year, alongside Jessica Pegula, and the pair make up a fierce defending partnership that should be looking to at least make the knock-out stages from a very difficult group.
Only Cam Norrie was able to beat the American here last season, in three sets in the quarter-finals, but Fritz returned the favour at the Tokyo Open in October to regain a 7-6 lead in their storied head-to-head. Considering his match practice against Alex de Minaur against an expectant home audience’s wishes, back Norrie to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: CAM NORRIE TO WIN A SET
