THE PREDICTION

There are brief signs of a return to form for former world number 25 Ugo Humbert after his horror season last year. The 24-year-old is a solid all-courter well capable of beating players inside the top 10 on his day but he has had to almost totally rebuild his confidence since contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open last January. World number 47 Lorenzo Sonego is another player capable of much better than his current ranking suggests but there were signs of his own improvement at the Miami Open last time out, where he reached the round of 16 with excellent victories over Dominic Thiem, Dan Evans and Frances Tiafoe. Humbert beat Sonego in straight sets at the 2021 Canada Masters but it remains to be seen how he fares in this second encounter. The Frenchman has more clay matches under his belt after coming through the qualifiers but Sonego is the more comfortable in these conditions and coming off a hot campaign. Back Sonego to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance in a match likely to see three sets.
