THE PREDICTION

World number 24 Jan-Lennard Struff made it five wins on the spin on Friday with a solid opener over Jaume Munar, predictably rolling on from his maiden ATP title claimed on home clay last week in Munich. The 34-year-old enjoyed an incredible run to the final here as a lucky loser from qualifying last season, taking a set from eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz before just being edged out, to spark the form that saw him finally achieve that elusive career milestone in Munich and it should take a top 20 talent at least to oust him in conditions that suit his powerful game here.

World number 14 Ugo Humbert certainly fits that category but clay has so far proven to be his least effective surface. The ice-cold left-hander beat Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Friday to get his Madrid campaign underway but a similar defeat to Dusan Lajovic in Barcelona last week says an industrious clay-courter can get the better of him in these conditions. Struff beat the Frenchman in their only previous encounter at the Sofia Open in 2022, although Humbert has significantly improved from that horror season of his, so back the German to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
