World number 17 Ugo Humbert received a bye to the round of 16 as the top seed this week in Lyon but he could probably have done with a kinder opening draw after struggling on clay in recent weeks. The 25-year-old won the Dubai Tennis Championships in February to break inside the top 20 for the first time and that momentum looked to power him through to the quarter-finals at the Monte-Carlo Open before the clay, his least effective surface, caught up with him.
World number 67 Dominik Koepfer is at his best in these conditions and he will back himself to emulate his shock win over the Frenchman in Miami, coming back from a set down to oust Humbert en-route to a last 16 exit to Daniil Medvedev.
The 30-year-old snapped a poor run since at the Italian Open, reaching the third round before defeat to eventual semi-finalist Tommy Paul, and he survived an early scare here in three sets to suggest he is up for a battle. Back Koepfer to win a set to leave the victor up to chance.
