THE PREDICTION
This is a huge opportunity for one of world number 73 Tomas Martin Etcheverry and number 134 Yannick Hanfmann to make a rare tour final. It would be 23-year-old Etcheverry’s second final on tour after he finished runner-up to Nicolas Jarry at the Chile Open in three sets back in February and he is certainly the player with more dependable recent form to factor into this first encounter between the two. However, 31-year-old Hanfmann stunned second seed Tommy Paul in straight sets in his first of two matches on Saturday to make a real statement of intent and he has the better experience at this level as this would be his third tour final after runners-up places at Gstaad in 2017 and Kitzbuhel in 2020. Etcheverry knocked out a tough foe of his own in Cristian Garin on Saturday but that three set slog may take its toll on the Argentine the longer this semi-final goes on. There are plenty of extra, odd factors about these matches on Sunday given the heavy disruptions in Houston this week but back Hanfmann to earn at least a set with less court-time in his legs and leave the winner up to chance.
