THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Andy Murray is enjoying a vengeful tour of recent vanquishers at the Miami Open, coming back from a set down to oust Matteo Berrettini (who beat him to the Stuttgart Open title in 2022) before an impressive straight-sets victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry either side of a rain delayed second round. The 36-year-old has lost his last two matches with Etcheverry, including poorly at the Australian Open in January, and he will have passed a significant test, internally, in avenging those here. Murray now faces up-and-coming Czech youngster Tomas Machac for the second time this season, with Machac winning their first encounter in straight sets at the Marseille Open in early February. The 23-year-old will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 55th after claiming the biggest ranking win yet over an out-of-sorts Andrey Rublev on Friday, backing up a solid opener over Darwin Blanch, to look the slight favourite on form to come through this likely thriller.
It is difficult to fully quantify Murray’s tentatively improving form, with back-to-back matches won on tour for the first time since August, but the Brit will take to the court for a third day on the spin due to the disruptive weather this weekend and that could eventually take its toll. Back Machac to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable victors or consider the three-set option on its own.
