THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Taylor Fritz ended last season in disarray after a consummate defeat to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of the US Open, with defeats to the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Shintaro Mochizuki and Alexander Shevchenko depicting a concerning depreciation. The 26-year-old cuts the frustrated figure of a player who may never quite reach the level he had thought capable, with his Indian Wells title and Wimbledon quarter-final in 2022 career highlights, but better consistency against lower-ranked players would be a starting goal for 2024.

23-year-old Facundo Diaz Acosta brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 93rd into his Australian Open debut after ending last season with some strong work on the Challenger circuit. Fritz beat Cam Norrie but lost to Alex de Minaur at the United Cup last week, as part of the USA’s failed title defence, to bring very little to go on into Melbourne. The conditions suit him far better than his opponent but it is difficult to back him with any real confidence. Take Fritz to win outright or consider backing Diaz Acosta to snatch a set in defeat.

TIP: TAYLOR FRITZ TO WIN
