Former world number nine Fabio Fognini overcame Dan Evans in topsy-turvy three sets late on Thursday to entertain adoring home fans in Rome and he will be a genuine threat to 11th seed Taylor Fritz in these conditions. World number 13 Fritz is an excellent all-courter whose run to the semi-finals at the Madrid Open last week suggest he is ready to rediscover some of his previous on-court grit but Fognini, who is a cult veteran in these parts, will do all he can to disrupt and frustrate the American.
The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but they have not met since 2019, the year Fognini achieved his biggest success with victory at the Monte-Carlo Open.
