THE PREDICTION

Defending champion Alex de Minaur overcame in-form Tommy Paul in three sets on Thursday, backing up a straight-sets victory over Lorenzo Sonego in a repeat of last season’s Eastbourne International final. The 23-year-old won the latest of his five ATP titles here last season on a surface that suits his lightning pace but he faces a tough challenge of his defence here in former champion Taylor Fritz, who won in 2019. The world number 14 struggled to get up to speed at Queen’s last week but back-to-back straight sets results so far in Eastbourne should see him confident again after a few months of niggling fitness issues. The American has won the last two encounters with De Minaur, including in three sets at this season’s Indian Wells on his way to the title, but the Aussie leads this head-to-head record 3-2. De Minaur has won at least a set in each of their five encounters, so taking him to earn at least one here looks the sensible move.
