THE PREDICTION
30-year-old Taro Daniel will break the top 60 for the first time in his career after an incredible week in Auckland, coming through qualifying to stun top seed Ben Shelton in straight sets on Friday. The Japanese will face another surprise finalist in fellow qualifier Alejandro Tabilo, who received a walkover to the semi-finals before a shock victory over Arthur Fils. 26-year-old Tabilo will also break inside the top 60, win or lose, after reaching his second ever ATP final on tour but he faces a player with a 100% record at this stage, with Daniel winning his only ever previous final at the Istanbul Open back in 2018.
Obviously this totally unlikely final could go any which way in a first meeting between the two but it is certainly an advert for dipping back into the Challenger circuit to find some form as both players won off-tour titles late last season to boost their chances in January. Daniel’s winning experience at this level, and his fabulous upset of Shelton, make him the slight favourite here but back the Japanese to earn at least a set to leave the victor of this madcap week up to chance.
