THE LOWDOWN
Reigning champions Switzerland avenged their controversial defeat to Russia in 2021 with a real hunger last season, beating Australia 2-0 in the final. The Swiss come in seriously underpowered this time around with both Viktoria Golubic and Jil Teichmann enduring woeful seasons in 2023, particularly surprising in Teichmann’s case after a strong 2022, and with the sudden news that world number 17 Belinda Bencic is planning to play despite announcing her pregnancy last week. The 26-year-old enjoyed a stellar start to this season with two WTA titles claimed in Abu Dhabi and Adelaide but she has played just one competitive match since losing to Sorana Cirstea in the round of 16 at the US Open.
Czechia’s rich tennis history and seemingly never-ending production line of top young talent makes them a clear title contender here in Seville. World number six Marketa Vondrousova has made the journey from the WTA Finals in Cancun to take part in the tournament and she will have to be called on straight away in this early fixture against Switzerland, with the hugely capable Marie Bouzkova likely to deputise for an injured Karolina Muchova as second option. Doubles duo Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova will likely miss out this first tie but the decorated pair should be able to make the difference if needed in key moments later this week – with both in decent singles form to offer plenty of options.
THE PREDICTION
Little can be assumed in this opening match with so little known about their starting line-ups but assuming Belinda Bencic and Jil Teichmann line up in the singles, with Golubic likely to play doubles alongside either of the top two, Czechia simply look too strong. Wimbledon champion Vondrousova has the match practice in her legs to cope with an initial onslaught by Bencic whilst one of Linda Noskova or Marie Bouzkova should have enough to cope with an out-of-sorts Jil Teichmann or young up-and-comer Celine Naef.
