World number two Jannik Sinner is the only player to have reached the semi-finals of all three Masters events this season, beating Holger Rune in three thrilling sets to avenge his defeat to the Dane in the last four here 12 months ago. The 22-year-old won his first Masters title in Toronto last summer and added a second at the Miami Open last month, making it nine wins on the spin coming into this blockbuster clash with two-time Monte-Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. World number 12 Tsitsipas looks more like his former self than at any stage of the past two years on tour, breezing past Karen Khachanov on Friday to back-up an excellent victory over Alexander Zverev. The 25-year-old is yet to drop a set this week as he enjoys a return to his most successful court on tour but this is the ultimate test against a truly imperious Sinner, who is fast-approaching contention for a debut at world number one having lost just once all season.
The Greek leads Sinner 5-3 in a well-contested head-to-head but, as he has against so many top players on tour, the Italian has turned the tables in their recent matches – winning each of their last two at the Rotterdam Open and ATP Finals last season. Tsitsipas leads 3-1 on clay, including their most recent match on the surface in Rome two years ago, but it is no understatement to say that the two-time Monte-Carlo will have to beat the best player in the world right now to reach a third final. Back Sinner to edge this contest, probably in three sets.
