THE PREDICTION

World number 41 Jan-Lennard Struff beat Pedro Cachin in straight sets on Thursday to bounce back well from his tight three-set exit to Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16 at the Madrid Open last Tuesday, impressing once again against the Spaniard after finishing runner-up to him in the Madrid final last season. The 34-year-old finally claimed his maiden ATP title at the Munich Open on clay last month, upsetting Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz en-route, and he should be considered a serious threat to the top order here in Rome.

That includes world number eight Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was shocked in straight sets by Thiago Monteiro at this stage of the Madrid Open two weeks ago. The 25-year-old looked a resurgent force in beating Casper Ruud to a third Monte-Carlo Open title last month but he was well beaten by the Norwegian a week later in Barcelona, where cracks began to show once again in three-set results over Facundo Dias Acosta and Dusan Lajovic.

This could be a fascinating seventh meeting between the two as their head-to-head is finely poised at 3-3, with Struff leading 2-0 on clay after a three-set victory over the Greek in the quarter-finals of Madrid last season. Each of their last five matches have seen sets go both ways, and four of their six matches have seen at least one tiebreak, so back in-form Struff to earn at least a set and consider adding at least a tiebreak into the mix.

TIP: JAN-LENNARD STRUFF TO WIN A SET
