THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Stan Wawrinka has moved back inside the top 50 on tour after some serious hard-grafting over the past 12 months. The 38-year-old no longer possesses the diesel required to make deep runs at the longer events on tour but he reached a first final since 2019 at the Umag Open in July, finishing runner-up in three sets to Alexei Popyrin, and he will be desperate go one further this week in a wide open in draw at Stockholm. A straight-sets victory over Borna Gojo on Tuesday is a solid start but 23-year-old Tomas Machac will be a tough foe after enjoying that rarest of lucky loser bumps up from qualifying straight through to the round of 16. The Czech set a career-high ATP world ranking of 81st after winning a Challenger event last tine out and a second chance following his three-set defeat to Dino Prizmic in qualifying should see him swing freely here. It would not be a surprise to see a ball burst under the pressure of these two fierce hitters but back Wawrinka to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
