Former world number three Stan Wawrinka claimed his only Masters title here in Monte-Carlo back in 2014 in a win that foreshadowed his incredible run to the Roland-Garros title the following summer. The 38-year-old has been enjoying his tennis on court in recent months having successfully returned to tour from a long lay-off and a recent run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells saw him pull back inside the top 100 ahead of a now very intriguing clay swing. 26-year-old Tallon Griekspoor set comes into Monte-Carlo at a career-high ATP world ranking of 35th after claiming his maiden ATP title at the Maharashta Open at the start of the season but a defeat to Roberto Carballes Baena at the Marrakech Open on Friday suggests he will struggle against the more comfortable clay-courters out there. The Dutchman beat Wawrinka in their only previous encounter back in 2018 but a first meeting on clay should swing the other way. This is still tight given Griekspoor’s excellent year, though, so take Wawrinka to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
