World number 19 Sebastian Baez won his most prestigious of six ATP titles at the Rio Open in February, adding his sixth a week later at the Chile Open. The 23-year-old also won back-to-back titles last summer at Kitzbuhel and Winston-Salem, particularly impressive in transitioning seamlessly from clay to hardcourt there, but an understandable depreciation after those titles appears to be a pattern as he brings a four-match losing streak into Madrid. World number 99 Luca Van Assche overcame qualifier Zizou Bergs in three sets on Wednesday to make it two wins in three on clay after a poor start to 2024. The 19-year-old has a promising future on this surface after winning the French Open Boys’ Singles in 2021 but he will have to improve on his opening performance if Baez finds some of his trademark intensity here. Take Baez to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
