World number 28 Roberto Bautista Agut started 2023 in serious form with a run to the Adelaide 2 final and the round of 16 at the Australian Open but the Spaniard looks to be struggling with confidence on court right now as he takes a four-match losing streak into Monte-Carlo. The 34-year-old is an excellent all-courter well capable of a deep run here but he has yet to make it past the round of 16 and this does not look like the year to change that. World number 53 Mikael Ymer is a surprising entrant this week considering an awful-looking injury that saw him retire from a first round match at the Miami Open two weeks ago. The Swede set his new career-high ATP world ranking last month after reaching two quarter-finals on tour this season but he has yet to really click into the gear that saw him reach the semi-finals at the Citi Open last August. It is hard to find a candidate to back in this tricky first meeting between the two and that certainly makes this match a non-starter for an accumulator. Otherwise, back RBA to navigate a way past Ymer as the Swede’s fitness is questionable.
