Former world number three Dominic Thiem reached the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open this week before defeat to Quentin Halys as he continues to struggle with his form and confidence. 11 of the 29-year-old’s 17 ATP titles have come on clay but the most prestigious of them have come on hardcourts at Indian Wells in 2019 and most recently at the US Open in 2020, as well as each of his last three. World number 42 Richard Gasquet also comes off a poor loss by his standards to Alexandre Muller at the Marrakech Open but the 36-year-old claimed the 16th title of his long career back in January at the Auckland Classic. The Frenchman is probably at his weakest on clay but this match remains wide open with Thiem proving to be one of the more unpredictable players on tour over the last few months. The pair share a 2-2 head-to-head record but Thiem has won their two most recent matches, including late last season at the Metz Open. Back Thiem to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
