This will be an intriguing first clash between world number 101 Quentin Halys and number 149 Lloyd Harris, both of whom are capable of much better tennis than their current ranking suggests. 27-year-old Halys found the form of his career this time last season, taking Novak Djokovic to two tight tiebreaks before defeat in Adelaide, and he enjoyed a strong run to the third round at Wimbledon before defeat to eventual semi-finalist Jannik Sinner. Both the Frenchman and 27-year-old Harris have failed to win a tour-level match since October last season to leave this result totally up in the air, although former number 32 Harris certainly has the higher ceiling hidden somewhere behind a few years of debilitating injury setbacks. The big-serving South African reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2021 before defeat to Alexander Zverev but he has been far from that level since midway through 2022.
