THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka overcame Peyton Stearns in three competitive sets on Thursday to get another Miami Open campaign underway. The 34-year-old is one of a handful of players to have won the elusive ‘Sunshine Double’ after claiming the Indian Wells and Miami Open titles back-to-back in 2016 and she is a three-time champion in Miami, picking up her other two trophies here in 2009 and 2011.

World number seven Qinwen Zheng came back from a set down before Katerina Siniakova was forced to retire injured in their third set on Thursday. The 21-year-old changed the course of her career with an incredible run to the Australian Open final in January but she led something of a charmed life, doing so without facing a top 50 player until eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final, and she has understandably struggled to recalibrate on tour since. Azarenka beat Zheng in straight sets at the Adelaide International last season but the Chinese has improved tenfold since. However, Azarenka’s affinity with both the conditions and the crowd in Miami should come to her aid in a tight contest here. Back the Belarussian to edge through.

TIP: VICTORIA AZARENKA TO WIN
