Piero Guaylupo: "El Lobo" on the hunt for another savage finish
Perfect across eleven fights as a professional, Piero Guaylupo (11-0) enters the Apex with a reputation as a ferocious KO artist. Still just 21 years old with multiple regional titles to his name, the unbeaten “El Lobo” has finished all but one of his eleven wins by way of strikes, terrorizing the South American regional circuit with his heavy hands. With six first round KOs, the Peruvian comes out of the blocks hot, swinging with ill intentions until his opponents crumble before him. He hasn’t faced the stiffest levels of competition to date, but he’s still pulverized anybody put in front of him.
Callum Connor: "007" aims to hand out a first loss
Manchester Top Team prospect, Callum Connor (8-0) gets his chance at a UFC contract following an impressive eight fight win streak on the UK regional circuit following a solid amateur career. Long and rangy for the weight class at 6’0”, “007” is another heavy-handed striker, earning five wins by way of KO. The undefeated Englishman is a life-long Muay Thai practitioner, utilizing excellent knees and kicks to all levels to complement his powerful hands. He has a solid jab and throws tight, technical combos at all times.
Piero Guaylupo vs Callum Connor prediction
Pitting two undefeated KO artists who like to get in the pocket and bang things out against one another, this one has the makings of an absolute barnburner.
However, someone’s “0” has got to go, and my gut feeling is that “someone” is going to be Connor. “007” has the range advantage here, but Guaylupo looks to be extremely durable from his fights on the regional circuit and I don’t think it’s outrageous to say that he’s going to be the hardest hitter that the Mancunian has ever faced.
Connor could conceivably win this if he’s willing to jab Guaylupo up at range, but considering that finishes are prioritized on the Contender Series, I think he’s going to be more willing than usual to engage in a firefight and meet Guaylupo in the pocket. I favour Connor at kicking range, but I think that he’s going to be in danger once he enters boxing range against a striker of “El Lobo’s” power.
In any case, this is going to be a high-paced banger between two exciting prospects. It’s hard to know which way it’s going to go, but one thing is likely a certainty; it’s not going the distance.
