THE PREDICTION
World number nine Hubert Hurkacz was composed in a tough fixture with China’s Zhizhen Zhang, beating the up-and-comer in straight sets to set the tone for an eventual 3-0 victory in the quarter-finals. The 26-year-old endured a season of two halves last year but he came good towards the end of the late hardcourt swing, winning a second Masters title at the Shanghai Open on a surge that almost saw him qualify for the ATP Finals for the first time. Hurkacz brings a 2-1 record in singles this week into the semi-finals to face world number 22 Adrian Mannarino, who has lost two of his three matches as the weakest link of this strong French team. The 35-year-old found the form of his career late last season too, winning three of his five ATP titles, but defeats to top 10 players Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud this week show a gulf in ability that should tell here too.
Hurkacz and Mannarino share an interesting 2-2 head-to-head but the Pole should be able to dig deep in this vital clash in conditions that suit him best. All four of their matches so far have ended in straight sets but take Hurkacz to win outright with increased pressure here.
