THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Beatriz Haddad-Maia did her best to aid Brazil in their United Cup debut, beating Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets before a defeat to Spain in the doubles saw the tie end 1-2. The 27-year-old proved herself more than just a plucky opponent late last season when she won both the singles and doubles titles at the WTA Elite Trophy but there should be a relative gulf in class here against the overall WTA Finals champion. 22-year-old Iga Swiatek won her fourth Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros last June amidst a growing number of challengers for her throne. The Pole briefly lost her number one spot to Aryna Sabalenka after a shock exit in the fourth round of the US Open but she returned with a vengeance, first winning the Beijing Masters before an incredible 5-0 at the WTA Finals saw her end the season back at the top.
Haddad-Maia has the benefit of two competitive matches in her legs in this third meeting between the two and she stunned Swiatek in three sets in their first encounter at the Canada Masters in 2022. However, Swiatek won their next meeting in straight sets to reach the Roland-Garros final last summer and she will be desperate to make a statement in her first match of what promises to be another stellar season. Back the Pole to seal the tie with a win.
TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN
