24-year-old Pavel Kotov will set a career-high ATP world ranking of around 81st but he could rise as high as 62nd if he wins this maiden tour final in Stockholm. The Russian has been steadily improving on tour since the start of the Asian swing, where he took eventual champion Alexander Zverev to three sets before defeat in Chengdu, and he has thoroughly earned his place here after ousting Lorenzo Sonego, Tallon Griekspoor and Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets. Former number six Gael Monfils is the clear favourite on ability in his first final since winning Adelaide 1 early last season but his 11-22 record in finals suggests a baggage-less Kotov will provide a tough challenge. 37-year-old Monfils has beaten two in-form foes in Adrian Mannarino and Laslo Djere to build on his already excellent comeback from injury and he will receive a near-partisan backing as one of the most popular veterans on tour. Kotov is untested at this level but likely ready to thrive under the pressure. The sensible call is taking Monfils to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance but otherwise consider three sets here.
