World number 55 Nuno Borges reached the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open on home clay in Portugal two weeks ago before just missing out to Cristina Garin in controversial fashion. The 26-year-old began 2024 in the form of his career so far to produce a stunning run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open and he claimed the quality Phoenix Challenger title last month to maintain it. A comeback over veteran Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday is an excellent start to any campaign but world number 92 Corentin Moutet is a very tricky opponent in these conditions, as former world number 10 Denis Shapovalov found in a straight-sets defeat on Tuesday. 24-year-old Moutet is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests, with injuries hampering some excellent progress in late 2022, but in-form Borges is a tough man to break down. Given their opening results, consider taking Moutet to earn at least a set or risk the three set option to avoid a full result.
