THE LOWDOWN
World number one Novak Djokovic won a record-extending 10th Australian Open title here last season and he equalled Margaret Court’s all-time Grand Slam title total at 24 with victory at the US Open in September. The 36-year-old is targeting the overall open era record of 25 Grand Slam titles this fortnight in Melbourne, on his elf-professed favourite court in the world, but he brings less practice into the draw than he would like after a wrist injury saw him struggle at the United Cup last week; beating Zhizhen Zhang in straight sets, Jiri Lehecka in three and falling to a shock defeat to Alex de Minaur. Djokovic should be more than capable of working out the kinks over the first week in Melbourne but the wrist issue is certainly a concern as the hours on court tot up. The Serb ended last season in his usual imperious style, though, winning four titles on the spin in Cincinnati, New York, Paris and Turin before falling foul of Jannik Sinner at the Davis Cup Finals.
THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Dino Prizmic is a hotly anticipated rising star of Croatian tennis who conceded just one set in qualifying to make his Grand Slam debut. The world number 178 won the French Open Boy’s Singles title last summer but he has already impressed on hardcourts too to avoid the faint praise of ‘clay specialist’ at such a young age. In recent years young players have found a reasonable amount of early joy against Novak Djokovic, with Jack Draper, Holger Rune and Jenson Brooksby taking notable sets from the Serb at majors before defeat, and Prizmic is certainly capable of spring an early surprise if the defending champion starts slowly. However, the sensible call remains backing Djokovic to blast through in straight sets – particularly as he aims to play as little as possible this week to nurse his wrist.
