World number 11 Casper Ruud ended 2022 as runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals but he failed to qualify for the year-end championships in November after a surprisingly poor season. The 25-year-old will look to wipe the slate clean over the Australian swing but Norway’s poor depth in talent makes this week a tall order in Sydney, with Malene Helgo unlikely to beat any of her WTA opponents. World number 23 Tallon Griekspoor enjoyed the best year of his career so far in 2023, winning his first two ATP titles in Pune and on home grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The 27-year-old enjoyed a strong international campaign with the Netherlands in the Davis Cup last year and the Dutch should be considered something of a dark horse at the United Cup with a strong doubles partnership in their tail. Ruud beat Griekspoor in three tight sets at the Acapulco Open in their only previous encounter back in 2021 and this second clash should come as close again. Take Griekspoor to earn at least a set or consider taking a total of three here with little recent form to go on.
