33-year-old Arantxa Rus has plied her trade on the ITF circuit for many years, winning 32 minor titles along the way, but 2023 saw the Dutchwoman finally break her duck on the WTA tour with victory at the Hamburg Open on her favoured clay. Rus set a career-high WTA world ranking of 41st for her efforts last summer but she, understandably, struggled to match that intensity for the remainder of the year. This should be a reasonably straightforward task for Rus against world number 539 Malene Helgo, whose chances in this match probably go up if Casper Ruud manages to take the opening fixture. Rus leads their head-to-head 2-1 off the tour but this first meeting at this level looks set to swing violently on whichever nation needs a point most. Back Rus to take at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors or risk the outright call.
