THE PREDICTION
World number 124 Mai Hontama is enjoying a strong few weeks on tour, with her run to the semi-finals of the Osaka Open last month seeing a straight-sets victory over Nadia Podoroska. The 24-year-old lost in the last four to eventual champion Ashlyn Krueger in Osaka and her last two defeats have come at the hands of top players Ekaterina Alexandrova and Iga Swiatek to suggest she can be competitive this week. Hontama came back from a set down to beat Aliona Bolsova on Tuesday to get her Jasmin Open campaign underway in much the same way that world number 77 Podoroska overcame Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova on Monday. The 26-year-old is at her best on clay, and she will be eagerly anticipating a first injury-free clay swing next spring after coming back from a long absence, but she is certainly good enough for a deep run on hardcourts at this level. The Argentine did just that at the Ningbo Open last month, taking eventual champion Ons Jabeur to three sets before defeat, to make this a very tough call. Back Hontama to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
