THE PREDICTION

World number seven Casper Ruud should see this fortnight as his biggest opportunity yet to win a first Masters title, with victory at the Barcelona 500 last month proving that he can be more than an ATP 250 flat-track bully. The absence of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, coupled with his recent victories over world number one Novak Djokovic in Monte-Carlo and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Barcelona, say he could be the dark horse that this wide-open draw has opened the door for but a shock exit to Felix Auger-Aliassime last time out in Madrid brings doubt to the equation.

World number 58 Miomir Kecmanovic is far better than his current deflated ranking suggests, particularly on clay, and a straight-sets opener over qualifier Brandon Nakashima on Thursday gives him the foothold needed to dig deep here. Ruud beat the Serb in straight sets at this stage of Madrid two weeks ago to level their head-to-head 2-2 and he has won each of the last two, both on clay, to look like taking the lead here. Back the Norwegian to win outright for caution’s sake in what could be a lengthy battle.

TIP: CASPER RUUD TO WIN
