THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Jasmine Paolini brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th into Rome, where she has been handed a Centre Court opener for the second year running. The Italian had been enjoying an excellent spell of form from mid-summer last season but her incredible run to the Dubai Masters title in February has transformed her tour stereotype from perennial underdog to a positive brute force, capable of frustrating players at the very top of the sport into submission. Recent wins over Caroline Garcia and Ons Jabeur on clay have been encouraging, as was her three-set exit to Elena Rybakina, who beat her at this stage in Rome last season, in the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart Open but this remains a tough opener against a clay specialist.

World number 80 Mayar Sherif finished runner-up to Katerina Siniakova at the Lleida Challenger last week and she looked in great shape in a straight-sets dismissal of Petra Martic on Wednesday. The Egyptian beat Paolini to the Makarska Challenger title on clay last summer, from a set down, but back the Italian to dig deep on Centre to delight home fans in need of a figurehead to get behind.

TIP: JASMINE PAOLINI TO WIN
