World number 98 Maximilian Marterer enjoyed an excellent end to 2023 with a rare run to the semi-finals of a tour event at the European Open, beating Nuno Borges en-route, before reaching two Challenger finals – with victory in Danderyd. The 28-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 45th back in 2018 after a career-best run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros on his favoured clay but he has reached the third round both here (earlier that year) and at Wimbledon last summer. World number 66 Nuno Borges also enjoyed plenty of success on the Challenger circuit last season, finishing 2023 off with a title in his hometown of Maia in Portugal. The 26-year-old lost competitively to Lorenzo Sonego on his Australian Open debut here last season but Marterer’s recent victory suggests this is the German’s to lose. Take Marterer to earn at least two sets as the likelier victor of two capable players bringing decent form to Melbourne.
