THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Adam Walton has been handed a huge opportunity on Sunday, opening the Show Court Arena on his Grand Slam and ATP tour debut. The Aussie received a wildcard into Melbourne after some strong work on the Challenger circuit late last season but he has been unfortunate to draw rising star Matteo Arnaldi, who ended 2023 a Davis Cup champion with his native Italy. The 22-year-old enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on the ATP tour, including an incredible run to the round of 16 on his US Open bow, but snubbing the Next Gen ATP Finals in favour of a substitute’s place at the Davis Cup proved to be a brilliant decision as he claimed a vital victory over Alexi Popyrin in the final to give Jannik Sinner a head-start on sealing the tie.
A 3-2 record for 2024 is decent work so far for Arnaldi but expect him to be a factor in the early stages of this tournament after a three-set exit to Nicolas Jarry in Adelaide on Wednesday. Back Arnaldi to win in straight sets.
