THE PREDICTION

World number eight Marketa Vondrousova stunned everybody, not least herself, by winning Wimbledon last summer on what had looked by far her weakest surface, The 24-year-old always looked a huge talent, however, and particularly on clay after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros as a teenager back in 2019. A straight-sets victory over Donna Vekic on Tuesday gives the Czech a strong foothold here in Stuttgart but she has claimed back-to-back wins just twice this season after struggling with injury, and resultant poor form, in recent months.

World number 36 Anastasia Potapova overcame fellow Russian Liudmila Samsonova in three sets on Wednesday to look a threat here and she won her maiden WTA title on clay at the Istanbul Cup in 2022, with a run to the semi-finals here last season ended by runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. Vondrousova leads their head-to-head 3-1 as things stand but the Czech will need to find some elusive consistency to survive a tough foe here. Back Vondrousova to earn at least a set, as she has in all four of their previous encounters.

TIP: MARKETA VONDROUSOVA TO WIN A SET
