World number 60 Katerina Siniakova will be buzzing after avenging her Hong Kong Open final defeat to Leylah Fernandez last Sunday with a straight sets victory in the semi-finals here on Saturday. The 27-year-old is through to her third final on tour this season, winning her first to claim a fourth career WTA title at the Bad Homburg Open in June, and she is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests – particularly under pressure. World number 29 Marie Bouzkova looks the slight favourite on ranking but the younger Czech has lost three of her four WTA finals so far, with Siniakova level at 4-4. Bouzkova beat rising star Diana Shnaider to complete a spotless run to the Jiangxi final but recent defeats to Yue Yuan and Yulia Putintseva suggest she is vulnerable. Siniakova beat Bouzkova in three sets in the first round of Roland-Garros two years ago to win their only previous encounter and backing her to take at least a set feels the most sensible way to avoid a tricky result here. If forced to side with one Czech, back Siniakova to use last weekend’s defeat in Hong Kong as that extra motivation to win here.
