THE PREDICTION
World number eight Maria Sakkari finally snapped her title drought with a first Masters trophy claimed in Guadalajara late last season, adding to her 2019 Rabat Open. The 28-year-old is still seriously under-decorated for a player of her talents but 2024 promises to be more profitable than previous seasons if she can maintain a level head in her concerning kryptonite: semi-finals and finals. Sakkari reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros and the US Open in 2021, losing to eventual champions Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu, respectively, but she has failed to make it past the third round at a major since a last 16 exit here in 2022. World number 92 Nao Hibino enjoyed an out-of-the-blue week of searing form at the Prague Open last August, winning both the singles and doubles titles there, but she has struggled to find a win on tour since despite making the quarter-finals in Jiangxi. The 29-year-old can be a tricky customer at times but Sakkari beat her in straight sets here back in 2020 and she can be expected to do the same here.
